Lets Start With a Rant… and Some Hiccups

Right, my first proper blog, so I’m going to start as I mean to go on. With a rant.

I’ve spent most of the afternoon (in the second week of my Easter holidays) writing an English Literature essay about the frankly odd novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding.

Now I really can’t see the point in English Literature, and I’m sure this isn’t the first time I will say this. I really don’t see how analysing the social standings and deaths of non-existant fictional characters is going to help me in later life. Yes it’s all very well saying that it’s part of our history and that we should be proud of it etc. But I really couldn’t give a toss. I mean, good for Piggy that he got smooshed by a giant boulder, but how is that going to help me manage my finances or write a letter of formal complaint. I said the same thing with my last essay (on ‘Great Expectations’), why don’t they teach us something remotely useful. I mean, the government moan how we don’t know how to do this and that, but do they make any effort to teach it to us? No.

On a lighter, yet still rather annoying note, I managed to get 6 rounds of hiccups, spaced out fairly equally between now and lunchtime. And I tried every method I knew to get rid of them too. There’s the “scientifically proven” method, whereby you suck water through a straw whilst covering your ears, apparently causing pressure somewhere. That one didn’t work, so I tried the age old method of drinking from the wrong side of the glass, which was rather amusing, as I had a tall glass with only a small amount of water, meaning I had to tip my head pretty much upside down; all to no avail. In a last ditch attempt I tried all the others I knew, breathing in and out of a paper bag, gargling water, drinking water and holding my breath for long periods of time, as well as being scared by someone saying “boo!”. Yet none worked.
Anyone with any proven methods please leave me comment. I’m desperate.

On top of that, the backspace key has come off my laptop. Again. It still functions, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t very annoying.

And just as I’m finishing, I think I’m getting yet more hiccups.

Oh joy….
